My name is Patricia Bell. I hold a diploma in proofreading and editing, a postgraduate diploma in journalism, and a master's degree (with distinction) in English literature. I am also a published writer, with my non-fiction articles, poems, and short stories appearing in various literary journals, anthologies, and magazines.
I named my business after the bellbird for three reasons: my last name, my adopted nationality (I was born in Northern Ireland; the bellbird is native to New Zealand, where I live now), and my love of music and nature. (The bellbird's song is clear, melodious, and perfectly composed - just like a great piece of writing.)
I have travelled extensively, and taught English as a second language in France and Japan. I speak fluent French and basic Japanese. Learning (and teaching) another language is one of the best ways to become an expert at your own native tongue. I am highly skilled with words and language, and I am extremely particular when it comes to grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
I have 15 years' experience working as a fundraiser and communications specialist in the not-for-profit sector. For seven of those years I worked as a grant writing specialist, writing funding applications for New Zealand charities. The rest of my work comprised writing, editing, and proofreading newsletters, brochures, articles, media releases, annual reports, and websites.
Launching my own proofreading, editing, and writing business was the culmination of a lifelong love affair with words and language. Most recently, I have worked with the RNZSPCA, The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation, Asthma NZ, authors preparing manuscripts (novels and short stories) for publication, postgraduate students, and medical establishments in Auckland.
I am an approved proofreader for Auckland University of Technology, Massey University, and the University of Auckland.
I know how to deliver accurate work on time and within budget, and I take great pleasure from crafting and correcting a piece of writing to ensure it communicates its message clearly and compellingly, with no errors.
I would love to help you with your next writing project. Questions? Contact me today and I'll be happy to answer them.
